Here are 50 Lessons We’ve Learned Along the Way …

  1. If every decision is guided by the question, “What’s best for the students?”, schools will always make the right decision.
  2. Independent schools have the ability and flexibility to try new things and change quickly.
  3. When teachers, students, and parents collaborate, anything is possible.
  4. Having a growth mindset changes everything.
  5. Hands-on learning develops creative problem-solvers.
  6. Playing music and creating art is good for every aspect of your life.
  7. Playing sports develops important life skills.
  8. When teachers and coaches are mentors and guides, students win.
  9. When teachers and staff are always learning, the community grows.
  10. You can learn more from failure than from success.
  11. Invested teachers change lives.
  12. Students can be great athletes and great artists at the same time.
  13. It’s cool to be smart.
  14. You can change a student’s life by just listening.
  15. Diversity and inclusion make a better community.
  16. College counselors are the best friends you never knew you needed...until junior year. 
  17. Serving others is always rewarding.
  18. Global opportunities open minds and hearts.
  19. Entrepreneurship means learning to identify and solve worthy problems
  20. The more things you try, the better chance you have to find your passion.
  21. The friendships you make now can last a lifetime.
  22. Research is born in curiosity.
  23. Making time for meaningful discussions will enrich your life.
  24. Small classes and close relationships allow teachers to maximize each student’s potential.
  25. Supporting social, emotional, physical, and intellectual development is crucial to children’s success.
  26. Learning to write well might not make you a novelist, but it will serve you throughout your life.
  27. Your environment impacts how well you learn.
  28. It’s good to have a plan, but it’s better to have the flexibility to change a plan that isn’t working.
  29. Traditions unify people across decades and strengthen the community.
  30. Interacting with students of different ages across the school builds a strong, inclusive community.
  31. Having a teacher as an advisor gives you one more caring adult in your corner.
  32. When learning is fun, it sticks.
  33. Curiosity is at the root of all learning. 
  34. You don’t take responsibility; it’s yours already. Accept it. 
  35. Technology enhances good teaching; it doesn’t replace it. 
  36. You can’t be a good leader if you’ve never been a teammate.
  37. It’s OK not to be the best at everything as long as you’re working hard and enjoying yourself.
  38. Live with joy and intention.
  39. Hard work pays off.
  40. Sometimes NOT doing something is the best decision you can make. 
  41. If you don’t learn who you are, you won’t be able to learn who others are.
  42. Everyone is worthy of respect.
  43. If you try to recognize the good in everyone, everyone will recognize the good in you.
  44. Do the right thing even when no one is watching.
  45. When you’re part of a community that values hard work and dedication, you’re inspired to do your best.
  46. When in doubt, take a chance and do something new.
  47. When you think you’re finished, check one more time. 
  48. Keep going despite adversity; adversity will make you stronger.
  49. Sometimes the answer is to go to bed early.
  50. Take time to celebrate the milestones. And by the way, Happy 50th FCDS!!
